HAROLD GAINES - MADH GIN

Our interest initially came up because of what we heard about the Power Rolls; that the turnout would be 31 pounds more for every 700 pounds of seed ginned. That's what caught our interest to start with. And as we investigated into it a little more we found out that it would also increase our ginning capacity a little more also. So wanting to increase the efficiency of our gin that's what caught our interest to start with and as we got into it we found some of the other benefits that were advertised. The two main things are an increase in turnout and an increase in capacity.

When we first started with our Power Rolls they were installed and ready to go by the first day of ginning. The first few weeks we were still critiquing these units and they were not doing the turnout that we had expected and so we were initially a little disappointed in the turnout that they were doing. Then the Power Roll people came back in and reconstructed the seed cavity in them and tweaked on them a little bit here and there. When they left that time the units were beginning to produce.

They ginned cotton as advertised. Our turnouts went up immediately. You could catch samples of seed and visually see the difference between our old 141 Continentals and the Power Rolls. So we started doing tests then. We did turnout tests and the tests ranged in increases in turnouts from 14 pounds, the lowest test, to one test turned out 51 pounds greater. But on an average somewhere between 30 and 35 pounds is normally what the turnout increased with the Power Roll units.

As far as capacity, there was a little bit of increase in ginning capacity with our units. It wasn't that great. I believe we were limited with our lint cleaners. They kind of limited us to increase our capacity a whole bunch. But there seems to be an indication that they will increase our capacity some and that's what we are going to work on in the next year is our lint cleaners behind these units and see if we can up capacity a little bit more this coming year.

All in all I believe they are a good piece of equipment. They are still in the learning stage and in the experimental stage and they are smoothing out some of the rough edges and perfecting the units. We look for that much benefit and more in the next two years as we run these units.

I will say that we bought two Power Rolls for two of our three gin stands and we're entertaining the idea of buying that third unit for our third gin stand this year. Which, that's a good indication that we believe in the units and believe that they have a future in the cotton industry.
